It’s that time of year again – time to sit down and start making those resolutions. You probably have plenty of personal goals to set but, have you thought about setting some career goals for next year? Wanting to be successful without setting goals is like going on a trip without a destination. It’s the perfect time to reflect on what you want your career to look like a year from now or ten years from now, and to start thinking of an action plan to make your dreams a reality.

You probably have plenty of personal goals to set but, have you thought about setting some career goals for next year? It’s the perfect time to reflect on what you want your career to look like a year from now or ten years from now, and to start thinking of an action plan to make your dreams a reality.
Here are 3 tips for setting career goals for next year:
If you haven’t touched a basketball in ten years, setting a goal to be a professional basketball player is not just unrealistic – it’s laughable. When you set career goals you can’t possibly achieve, you’re left feeling foolish and discouraged. Consider your skills and abilities, personal limitations, and any obstacles that may prevent you from reaching your goal. Your goals should be challenging but attainable.
A goal without a plan is only a dream. If you want to set realistic and achievable goals, you need to get specific. Set a target and then plan out the action steps you need to take. What skills do you need to learn? How long will it take? What changes do you need to make? Big goals may seem unattainable but, breaking things down into small steps makes the process more attainable.
It’s important to set measurable goals so you can track your progress, set a reasonable timeframe, and recognize the outcome. When you set short-term and long-term goals, think of how you can measure them. Can you set a time frame for completion? Can you keep track of how far along you are? How will you measure whether the goal is complete?
