As we approach Mother’s Day, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the profound influence mothers have on our lives, including our career paths. Motherhood is not just about nurturing children; it’s about shaping futures and inspiring generations.
Mothers set our foundations from the second we arrive at this world.
Whether it’s cheering you on in all your endeavours, showing you their unconditional love or encouraging you in moments of uncertainty, mothers tend to always have your best interest at heart. You may, however, feel as though your mother doesn’t always cheer you on, or show unconditional love nor supports you during times of difficulty. Either way, this forms as part of your support base.
Mothers essentially mould you into the person they want you to be. They may take you to football practice or dance classes or to see your family every weekend. They also take you to school every day, make sure that you eat and tuck you into bed. Some mothers may not do any of those things or perhaps wished they had.
Nevertheless, these maternal acts every day begin to form our very own work ethics and values, which eventually guides us throughout our careers.
Ever thought that your current career could be the result of your mother’s influence?
Perhaps the absence of a mother’s influence could cause difficulty in education or forming relationships with peers. Maybe the loss of a mother could provide a guiding light to embrace new opportunities. Or perhaps the relationship with mother figures, encourages you in all areas of life to succeed.
Some mothers may encourage your education and emphasise the value of learning and intellectual growth. Other mothers may lack resources or guidance themselves, to be able to navigate the educational system, perhaps due to financial or familial pressures. Most mothers may recognise that a solid educational foundation serves as a pathway to greater economic stability, personal growth, and career advancement.
Through this, mothers become a role model as they demonstrate the importance of continuous learning and self-improvement as key drivers of career success. In doing so, mothers equip us with the skills and tools needed, to succeed. Most mothers offer guidance and advice to navigate various stages of career development, from choosing a university degree to pursuing job opportunities. Their guidance or lack of, can help us to make informed decisions about our career paths. This often may set the base for future academic and professional achievements.
Mothers may inspire us to explore new career opportunities by fostering a sense of curiosity and adventure. They can encourage us to step outside our comfort zones, pursue passions and embrace new challenges with confidence and enthusiasm. They also reinforce our self-worth, whether this be as a child or an adult, and highlight our strengths, talents, and past achievements. They help us to inhabit the belief that we are capable to succeed in new career endeavours.
However, mother’s may reflect on their child’s career journey with a mixture of pride and regret, wondering if they could have done more to support their aspirations. Perhaps they feel the could’ve helped you explore different career paths, provide financial support for more opportunities, or be more proactive in networking. Perhaps they wonder whether their own limitations and fears held them back from reaching their full potential.
Mothers are an important relationship that propel your career.
If you’re ever feeling stuck in your career, why not speak with your mother for some advice, as they can share their own knowledge, and tend to know you pretty well. One of our clients recently who is 62 and was facing a career pivot, reached out to their mum for counsel. It’s never too late.
If you would like some more support within your career, whether it be working towards a promotion, a complete career change or even to take the plunge and start your own business, partner with Careerships, to transform your career.
