Happy New Year!

What’s your New Year’s resolution?

→ Hit the gym?

→ Save ‘x’ amount of money this year?

→ Pursue a Career Ambition?

The above tends to be amongst the most common resolutions. Which is great. It’s positive, it’s eager and it has a long term plan in mind, with 365 days to achieve it. But what’s even more common than these resolutions is the:

“New Year, New Me”

Why is this phrase thrown around every year? And does anyone actually change?

Here’s why it’s Never ‘New Year, New Me’

‘New Year New Me’ realistically, is quite difficult to achieve. Naturally we change overtime, but it’s hard to change completely. This phrase can also have a negative spin. It can give the impression that the person you were the year before wasn’t enough, that you now feel the need to be different.

Perhaps we can collectively start the year with Gratitude.

Why not write down 10 things you were proud of this year. Even better, 10 things that you were proud of that YOU achieved. As big or small as you like, I know there are at least 10 things.

Now why don’t you reflect on those 10 things and ask yourself if you would still like the New Year to be a New You? If so, what are things you can improve on rather than dismissing your previous self.

→ Want to hit the gym?

Make a goal. How many hours a week will you go to the gym?

What exactly are you doing at the gym?

How do you want to improve your body – Strength? Flexibility?

→ Save ‘x’ amount of money this year?

How much a month will you put aside to hit your target?

Is this financial target possible to achieve sooner?

What is this target for? What are you saving for specifically?

→ Pursue a Career Ambition?

What ambition is it and is there a clear pathway?

Why do you want to change your Career this year, or is it a promotion you seek?

Asking yourself these questions is super important.

Why? Because if you are not really, REALLY, clear on your goals, they just won’t happen.

So here's an idea to get you started, why not grab a coffee and take your time to plan!

How to make most of your New Year Resolution

Step 1: Keep It Simple and Realistic Start with a goal that feels achievable. Instead of vague or overly ambitious resolutions like “Get fit” or “Save thousands,” break them down into specific, actionable steps. Think “Exercise three times a week” or “Save £50 each month.” Small, realistic goals are easier to stick to and set you up for success.

Step 2: Track Your Progress Consistency beats perfection. Use a notebook, app, or even a habit tracker to monitor your efforts. Celebrate the milestones, no matter how small—those little wins will keep you motivated to stick with it long-term.

Step 3: Stay Flexible and Have Fun Life isn’t perfect, and neither are resolutions. If you miss a day or slip up, don’t sweat it—just get back on track. To keep things enjoyable, find ways to make your goals fun. Pair workouts with your favourite podcast or challenge yourself with a no-spend week for savings.

This year don’t aim for perfection—aim for progress.

With a clear plan, a positive mindset, and a little flexibility, you can turn your resolutions into habits that truly last.

This way, you are continually improving, and don’t need to completely change the already great person you are this year.
